QEM Workshops for Chemistry Faculty of the 21st Century
QEM Network has received a three-year award from the National Science Foundation (NSF)'s Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MPS) Directorate to conduct annual workshops to broaden the participation of faculty from minority-serving institutions (MSIs) in the Directorate’s Chemistry (CHEM) Division programs. MPS is comprised of the Divisions of Astronomical Sciences, Chemistry, Materials Research, Mathematical Sciences, Physics, and the Office of Multidisciplinary Activities. These organizations provide the basic structure for MPS support of research and education. They support both disciplinary and interdisciplinary activities.
QEM Workshops for Chemistry Faculty of the 21st Century will investigate new strategies to enhance the participation of chemistry faculty at MSIs in research supported by the NSF MPS Chemistry Division. The overall goal is to cultivate research-active faculty at these institutions -- institutions that are responsible for the training of significant numbers of baccalaureate students from groups that have been underrepresented in the sciences. QEM will provide technical assistance to MSI faculty to help them to develop competitive proposals for programs in the Chemistry Division. The objective is to create a critical mass of research-active faculty at these institutions to guarantee that graduates from these institutions receive excellent training in modern chemical research.
On Friday and Saturday,
January 14-15, 2011,
QEM Network conducted a Chemisty information and proposal development
workshop, at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel at the BWI Airport in Baltimore, Maryland, to assist eligible Chemistry faculty
in
the preparation of proposals for submission to the NSF Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MPS) Directorate's Chemistry Division.
At the workshop, QEM consultants and NSF program officers from the Chemistry Division assisted participants in revising their proposed project summaries and refining their research and education outreach plans. Future QEM annual workshops in this series will be held in January 2013, in New Orleans.
