The Quality Education for Minorities (QEM) Network received support from the National Science Foundation (NSF)Õs Tribal Colleges and Universities Program (TCUP) to offer a second TCUP STEM Leadership Development Institute (LDI) from August 2008-August 2009. The first TCUP LDI was offered August 2006-August 2007. The LDI is designed to support and encourage broader participation by Native American, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian faculty and staff in leadership roles of STEM projects at their home institutions. Participants in the three-part Leadership Institute come from Native American, Alaska Native-serving, and Native Hawaiian-serving institutions that have multi-year projects supported through NSF/TCUP. Thirty participants from 16 TCUP institutions were selected as Cohort II participants in the 2008-2009 Institute.

In
2006, the
QEM Network received support from the
National Science FoundationÕs Tribal Colleges and Universities Program (TCUP)
for a workshop series focused on STEM leadership development. The STEM
Leadership Development Institute (LDI) supplements
QEMÕs activities under its overall TCUP leadership development initiative. The LDI was
designed to support and encourage broader participation by Native American
and Alaska Native faculty and staff in efforts to enhance STEM education at
their home institutions. The Institute for Cohort I participants consisted
of three sessions: Session I - a five-day Institute on August 21-25, 2006;
Session II - a two-day follow-up workshop on February 2-3, 2007; and Session
III - a five-day Institute on August 6-10, 2007.
An on-going support system for the Fellows included
mentoring, videoconferencing, a Listserv, and a Web-based information exchange
site. Graduates of the Leadership Development Institute, LDI
Fellows, are assuming leadership roles in the design, promotion,
and management of new STEM Projects for their campuses. (See In
The News links above.)
They also are providing enhanced support to the principal investigators
and project directors of the current TCUP projects at their institutions.
ELIGIBILITY: To be eligible for participation
in the Institute, applicants must be employed at a Tribal College
or University (TCU), an Alaska Native-serving institution (ANSI) or a Native
Hawaiian-serving institution (NHSI) that has a multi-year NSF/TCUP
award. He/she must be an enrolled or affiliated member of a federally recognized
tribe/entity or have a demonstrated long-term commitment to and involvement
in STEM education at TCUs, ANSIs, or NHSIs.
ADDITIONAL BENEFITS: QEM covered travel, lodging, and
meals for participants during each Institute workshop; provided a laptop
computer to each participant for use during the Institute year; and offeedr
a $2,400 fellowship, payable in three installments ($1,000; $400; and $1,000),
upon successful completion of each session of the three-part Institute.
Receipt of the final fellowship installment was contingent upon having completed
or developed a viable proposal seeking funding for an on-campus STEM project
that the participant will lead. Participants successfully completing the
Institute were able to keep the computers issued to them.
